Choosing a metal

When it comes to selecting your ideal wedding bands or wedding rings, where do you start? First off, will the wedding ring be matching, complementing, or dissimilar from the engagement ring. Secondly, will the wedding ring be worn every day? Do you have an active lifestyle that involves your hands? Lastly, are you looking for hypoallergenic metal settings? Let us help you find the metal setting that matches your wants and style.

Yellow Gold

Enjoy a vintage, heirloom-like look? Go for 18 karat yellow gold, which gives that warm yellow glimmer that you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a subtle yellow radiance, 14 karat gold is for you! Also, for those who want more durability in their ring, a savvy choice would be 14 karat gold. The more gold in the mixture, the softer the metal can be.

White Gold

Out of all metal settings, white gold is the most versatile hands-down. Whether worn as a sleek band, or as a gemstone wedding band, white gold is a great choice. Between 14 karat white gold and 18 karat white gold, the same rule about durability applies. The more gold, the more likely it can scratch or dent versus 14 karat gold. If you prioritize visual qualities, 14 karat white gold will look more white and silvery compared to 18 karat white gold.

Rose Gold

Notably, this metal setting is the most modern gold metal setting. Impart rosy, warm richness with 14 karat rose gold. If you adore the rose gold look but want less of a pink hue, we say to pick 18 karat rose gold. 18 karat rose gold is slightly less pink because it contains more pure gold in its metal mixture.

Platinum

A well-liked option for its visual silvery quality and resistance to most scratches and tarnishing. Between men’s gold wedding bands, which are priced lower, this is the next popular option because it withstands wear-and-tear. Another wonderful quality of platinum is its guaranteed hypoallergenic properties. Platinum metals are composed of 95% platinum and 5% of another metal.

MILGRAIN

Subtle and timeless, milgrain metalwork is a beautiful detail. Milgrain metalwork looks like delicate beading that would typically go along the edges of either the band and/or the diamonds.

MILGRAIN

TWISTS

Perhaps add some visual interest with a twisting band or a plain band with curving detail that resemble a coil.

TWISTS

CURVED

Simple and stylish, go with a metal band with a curved U design. These types of bands are the most ideal for ring stacking.

CURVED

MATTE

The most low-key finish. Those who choose this finish would expect a smooth, non-reflective, and luster-free band.

MATTE

HIGH POLISH OR POLISHED

A 180 from matte finish, expect shine and reflective qualities from a high polish band. Keep in mind, this popular finish can exaggerate scratches. We advise selecting a metal like platinum that’s more resistant to wear-and-tear.

HIGH POLISH OR POLISHED

SATIN

The best of both worlds--shiny but not reflective. Similar to polished bands, visually these bands have a smooth appearance.

SATIN

BRUSH OR CROSS-SATIN

Shiny and lustrous, but not reflective. Look closely and you can see a cross-hatch pattern that’s ideal for hiding tiny scratches from everyday wear.

BRUSH OR CROSS-SATIN

SAND-BLASTING

Enjoy a unique, modern, and industrial look? Choose a metal finish with some grit--reminiscent of white noise on metal. Most like a matte finish, no shine/luster, and no reflective qualities.

DIAMONDS

Commonly, diamonds for men’s wedding bands are set on the band--whether it may be a single focal diamond or smaller accent diamonds throughout the metal band. Wedding bands with diamonds are great for those who aren’t shy of extra bling.

FAQ

What is a wedding band?

A wedding band (also known as a wedding ring) is a ring that symbolizes marriage. Wedding rings represent eternal love, a circle without a beginning or end. Partners exchange wedding bands or wedding rings during a wedding ceremony, after stating vows. Typically worn on the third finger of the left hand, wedding rings are a public sign of being married. That goes on to say, nowadays the rules and etiquette of wedding ring wearing are more flexible.

What's the difference between a wedding ring and a wedding band?

In short, wedding rings are more intricate. On the other hand (no pun intended), wedding bands are simple and minimal, usually, they are a plain metal band or a metal band with diamonds set flesh..

How much money should you spend on a wedding ring?

There is no set amount that one can spend on a wedding band. The amount you spend on wedding rings is entirely up to you. On average female wedding rings are $900-$1000. Male wedding rings are $500-$650. Depending on metal type, accent diamonds, and more, the costs can vary.

Remember to prioritize your budget, and have a conversation with your partner and/or their family about expenses on wedding rings.

Who buys the wedding bands?

Traditionally, the way it goes is binary and assumes all weddings involve a groom and a bride. In this scenario, the bride would buy the groom's wedding ring. Correspondingly, the bride (and/or her family) purchases the groom's wedding ring. However, in the present-day, whoever buys the wedding rings or bands is up to the couple. As long as the agreement is mutual, the expense is up for grabs. We usually see couples splitting the cost of their wedding bands. No matter which approach you go with, as long as both parties feel comfortable.

What is the best metal for a wedding band?

The "best metal" is subjective. Overall, our gemologists recommend 14 karats (kt) white, yellow, or rose gold; it is also the most popular and least expensive compared to platinum, titanium, and tungsten.

When it comes to 14kt gold to 18kt gold, 14kt gold has less gold in its mixture and is less likely to scratch. In terms of durability, both 14kt and 18kt gold is durable for everyday wear. If you are looking for more durable and pricier options, look into platinum metal settings. Platinum visually looks most like white gold and is known to be hypoallergenic. Gold and platinum can be scratched, however, tungsten is scratch-resistant.
