What Are VS1 Clarity Diamonds?

VS1 of Very Slightly Included 1 diamonds are graded by GIA and marked on the diamond certificates. VS1 is a high clarity grade with no eye visible inclusions and only small, hard to identify inclusions under 10x magnification. These diamonds represent the top 5% of all gem quality stones and are highly recommended as a blend of value and quality. Common inclusions include clouds, feathers, crystals, pinpoints and indented naturals. VS1 means a minimal number of small non-noticeable inclusions.

What is an VS1 Clarity Diamond

A VS1, or Very, Very Slightly Included 1, diamond has minute inclusions only visible under 10x magnification by a trained gemologist. No imperfections can be identified by the naked eye.

Is VS1 or VS2 Clarity Better?

As diamonds are higher on the clarity grading scale established by GIA, the ranges for the grades are smaller. In other words, it's “easier” for a diamond to get a VS2 grade compared to a VS1 grade because fewer diamonds will quality for VS1. So which is truly the better grade? Well, two factors decide that. First, the premium for VS1 is greater in many instances. Sometimes, you'll find instances where VS1 is less - take advantage of those situations. Second, a VS1 diamond will never have eye visible inclusions. A VS2 will have eye visible inclusions only about 5% (or less) of the time. Even so, it will only be in larger diamonds above 1.00 ct. So we recommend VS1 diamonds over VS2 when the price difference isn't too large and so you're getting maximum value for your purchase.

In fancy shapes (shapes other than round), you should consider VS1 over VS2, particularly in step cut diamonds (emerald or asscher). Diamonds with larger, open facets tend to show inclusions more. Therefore a VS2 inclusion may become eye visible and distract the eye. Consider VS diamonds with inclusion that are off center or not directly under the table facet of the diamond. Always purchase diamonds that become with GIA grading reports so you can confirm the quality and purity of the diamond. A great deal is often too good to be true and there’s typically a reason for that. You can comfortably purchase a VS1 clarity diamond without seeing it’s images or video because you know the diamond will be eye clean and sparkle isn’t affected.
